Hey so I found this on the Apple support forums and wanted to put it somewhere for my very own posteriority..

If you want to switch on the backspace key in Safari back to it’s Lion and before standard, open terminal under Applications -> Utilities -> Terminal¬†and copy/paste the following (type it if you’re a masochist):

defaults write com.apple.Safari com.apple.Safari.ContentPageGroupIdentifier.WebKit2BackspaceKeyNavigationEnabled -bool YES

I would hazard a guess that if for some insane reason you wanted it back to being off.. nope I can’t think of a reason, well you’d probably set that last bit from YES to NO

After that simply restart safari and Robert is your father’s brother as they say..

If you don’t trust me, please do feel free to visit the original forum for clarification..

Hope you find it useful!
