ALT.Lion
Just a short one, but it seems that since Lion came out, the one key difference is literally, the key to everything is ALT…

So after going to the London Facebook Developer Garage tonight, I was happily surprised that it was more useful than the month before. I don’t really know the atmosphere there fully yet, but it’s good to be a regular for a bit, become a familiar face and part of the community. I somehow got speaking [...]

Would it be possible to keep track of phishing with a set of twitter searches, analyse the tweets with the word phishing etc. in and issue some form of early warning system?

I’m not writing this as a review as such, just a little bit on my recent experience, but making a ‘switch’ back to windows, even if it’s literally an Alt+Tab away from my OSX, has been a bit of a confusion.

Did I get bored of technology or did my iPhone 4 just make me completely apathetic to new releases of phones? I have to wonder about the tech news that announces endless phones and tablets, that possibly Apple isn’t actually for the device snobs, but for the people without the attention span to figure out which of the competition is actually good!
read full post →google voucher groupon something
After the failing of the Google/Groupon $6BN offer, Google have announced that they have been setting up their own. It sounds like you would expect if not better.. instead of having actual people making offers with merchants, they’re probably looking to automate the process and just throw servers at it. You’d sign up online, submit the offer you’re willing to give to your potential customers, and let the computers do the rest.
read full post →banner sizes and why?
I know why there are standard sizes for advertising banners on websites, but the why for the specific sizes is less clear. For example, what is the deal with the 728x90px leaderboard.. I might be living in a bubble but there’s nowhere on my site that is 728 pixels wide.

I was just flicking through Apple’s app store checking out reviews on magazine apps because I have clients who are interested in this sort of thing.. who isn’t these days. Wired magazine went from the reason to get an iPad to something to avoid..
read full post →Making use of this, describing my bookmarks
The plan is to link to sites and describe things more than write large amounts of stuff myself, although who knows how it will pan out. I already have a contributor lined up who I’ve worked with and known for almost 20 years, so lets see how we get on.
read full post →An Apple app store workaround?! Sell your source code?
if Apple doesn’t allow complete programmer control over what gets sold at the app store (read as app approval), what are the options to sell or open source the xcode projects that end users can build themselves?

Working with grace
Is tumblr the new twitter?
These feeds are so easy to embed, why use wordpress?!

I don’t wanna replace my mouse.. But the double click seems broken..
Note to self..
Make an effort to attend as many open source software, web dev, Facebook dev, any dev and design events and conferences, inevitably meet nice and interesting people, sometimes useful people.. After 8 years it’s still important to network, maybe more so now..

We’re at the diner, retro milk!
iphone data open
so sounds like there’s something going on with logging wifi and gps data on iphones and ipads, of course there’s going to be the usual uproar, but you know maybe it’s kinda cool. What could you do with all that location data?
Well .. a couple of fun ideas, how about a real life stumbleupon where you get suggested streets you’ve never been to, or even what’s there that’s similar to places you have been. I guess thats possible without the live GPS tracking, but who really checks in everywhere they go?
I think I foursquare only at restaurants and cafe’s, and the odd techy event because the foursquare iphone app is easier to slap a picture and caption on than a blog or facebook.. that is of course until tumblr came into my life…

So I’m waiting for the wife to come along and go to the gym in town, it’s 10.30pm, there’s a 24hr fitness first right here. Just having a mint tea to kill some time
The Facebook developer garage was interesting tonight, talks on gamification and scaling popular sites by Pop cap and playfish. Very interesting, turning the world into a game and why it needs more consideration than action.
